What is MMA?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) combines Kickboxing, Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into one sport.  MMA is the sport displayed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).  MMA class has applications for self-defense, competition, and functional fitness.  Students learn techniques from multiple martial arts to participate in the world’s most realistic and modern self-defense sport.

Class Description

Students will increase strength and fitness, improve coordination, and learn all aspects of Mixed Martial Arts.  MMA class will teach a variety of stand-up techniques.  Students will develop a proper stance; practice footwork drills; and learn basic punches, elbows, knees, and kicks.  Wrestling and Judo are the martial arts that change the match from standing to the ground, and vice versa.  Students will learn take-down offense and defense.  Once on the ground, students engage their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills.  Submission, restraint, and escape moves teach students how to gain control while on the ground with their opponent.  During class, students will practice the above martial arts both separately and combined in MMA-style.

If interested in improving your MMA skills, we recommend attending both Kickboxing and BJJ classes.  Since MMA is so complex, it is necessary to focus on one specific style at a time.  Rothwell MMA breaks down MMA into separate classes of: Kickboxing- the stand-up portion of MMA, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu- the ground portion of MMA.

If you are looking to take your training to the next level, our Professional Fight Team may be right for you.  Rothwell MMA offers competition team training for members seeking advanced instruction and/or preparation for amateur & professional MMA bouts.  Competition team is by invitation only.  If interested, please see staff for details.
