Frequently Asked Questions

Can I try a class before I commit?

Yes, reserve your FREE trial class HERE.

Do you offer Karate, Taekwondo, or Tai Chi?

Rothwell MMA offers Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) instruction. MMA combines Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,  Kickboxing, Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, and Judo into one sport. Students learn techniques from multiple martial arts to participate in the world’s most realistic and modern self-defense sport.

We also break MMA down into separate, more detailed classes of Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

It is great if you have experience in another martial art! We ask that all new students participate in the beginner class on their first day, regardless of prior experience. The instructors will evaluate your skill level during that class and move you to the appropriate level for future classes.

Do you teach 'self-defense' classes?

Yes. Each of the martial art disciplines taught at Rothwell MMA are applicable in real-life self-defense situations. We offer group Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, and MMA classes. These are applicable in self-defense situations and improve students strength and in sport competitions.

We also offer one on one private lessons, and small group lessons, that can be tailored to your specific needs. This can include situations not covered in the group classes such as: walking to your car, jogging alone, awareness techniques. We do not offer any weapons training.

What age do you start youth classes?

Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for ages 6-13 years old. Youth Kickboxing is for ages 8-14 years old. Around 14 years old, students will be invited to the adult classes.

Will martial arts help my child learn discipline?

Martial arts develops discipline , confidence, and self-control. These skills will not only improve students' quality of life, but can enhance performance in other sports and activities.

At Rothwell MMA, we follow the 'Bushido Code.' The Bushido Code was the code of conduct for Samurai warriors. Each class, the instructors talk about one topic and how to apply it to their life and martial arts journey. The Bushido Code includes: Integrity, Respect, Courage, Honor, Compassion, Honesty, and Loyalty.

Do you teach proper technique or are the classes dance/aerobic based?

Our martial art classes focus on learning proper form, timing, and application in competition and self-defense situations. The instructors continuously monitor and make adjustments to students' form. Our instructors have years of training and also compete profesionally.

At other gyms, 'cardio kickboxing' is an aerobic workout where punches and kicks are put together into sequences. The movements are repeated in a rhythmic fashion, set to music, and require no partner or equipment. There is less emphasis on technique or self-defense- more emphasis on fitness.

How long will it take to get a black belt?

On average, it takes 10 years to progress from a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu white belt to black belt. Rothwell MMA follows the IBJJF Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu graduation guidelines. Belts are earned at Rothwell MMA, not given. It takes time and dedication to learn and master the techniques. Each belt color is an accomplishment to be celebrated.

Unlike other martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does not give black belts to children. Youth students have a different belt color system that culminates in a green belt. At 16 years old, the youth student may transition to the adult belt ranking system. BJJ black belts are only given to students 18+ years old.

I have no experience. Can I still join?

Yes! All classes are designed with beginners in mind. Most members join without any experience or prior fitness training. You will not get hit in the head or be “fighting” another member.

What if I haven't exercised in years (or ever)?

You have come to the right place!  You will get a good sweat in any of our classes but can participate at your own pace.  We encourage you to start out slow and gradually increase your intensity over time.  At any time during class, you can slow down or stop and take a break.  Starting out easy will help reduce soreness, prevent injury, and keep you motivated to keep reaching for your goals.  Alternate techniques may be substituted to accommodate injury or adjust intensity level.

Will I get hit in the head during Kickboxing?

No.  The Kickboxing class is taught “Dutch style,” where partners wear 16 oz. gloves and catch each others punches with the gloves. They also use kick shields, Thai pads, and focus mitts with their partners. There are no strikes directly to the head. For experienced members, we offer light sparring while wearing full protective gear.

I have prior experience. Can I try a free advanced level class?

It is great if you have experience! We ask that all new students participate in the beginner class on their first day, regardless of skill level. During your trial class, the instructors will evaluate your skill level and place you in the appropriate level for future classes.
