WHAT IS PANKRATION?

“Pankration” translates to “all powers” or one who has “complete power” over his enemies.  Pankration is an ancient Greek sport that combined wrestling, boxing, and kicking.  Pankration was added to the 33rd Olympic games in the year 648 BC.  It began as a violent sport but slowly added rules and restrictions, thus allowing young boys to compete.  This tempered version of youth Pankration was added to the Olympic games in 200 BC.  Today, Pankration is called Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and has many restrictions added for safety.

WHAT DOES THE TEEN MMA CLASS AT CONSIST OF?

The teen Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) class at Rothwell MMA combines Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Wrestling, Judo, Boxing, and Kickboxing into one class!  MMA class has applications for self-defense, competition, and functional fitness.  Students learn techniques from multiple martial arts to participate in the world’s most realistic, effective, and modern self-defense sport.  Effective self-defense skills are taught while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for youth ages 10-17 of all experience levels.

The 60 minute class will strengthen and condition both the bodies and minds of the students.  Students will learn how to move and control their bodies, increase strength and fitness, and improve coordination and athleticism.  They will also learn when it is appropriate to use martial arts techniques, how to practice self-control and respect, and to work as a cooperative team member.  These skills will not only improve their quality of life, but can enhance performance in other sports and activities.

Besides strength and conditioning, MMA class will teach a variety of stand-up techniques.  Students will develop a proper stance; practice footwork drills; and learn basic punches, elbows, knees, and kicks.  In Teen MMA competitions, strikes and kicks are allowed to the chest, stomach, ribs, thighs and calf only.  No strikes to the head are allowed.

Wrestling and Judo are the martial arts that change the match from standing to the ground, and vice versa.  Students will learn take-down offense and defense.  Once on the ground, students engage their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills.  Submission, restraint, and escape moves teach students how to gain control while on the ground with their opponent.

During class, students will practice the above martial arts both separately and combined in MMA-style.

MY CHILD IS A BEGINNER. CAN HE/SHE JOIN?

Yes, this is a beginner level class for ages 10-17 years.

In time, an intermediate and advanced level class will be added.  We also recommend that MMA students attend Youth BJJ and Youth Kickboxing classes to learn more details in those specific areas.
